Happy Leap Day!

February 29, 2012

It will be another four years before I can say that again!

As we all know, typically the month of February has 28 days. This year, however, is a leap year, and February gets an extra day added to the month. Do you know why?

Well, we all can blame Julius Caesar. Yes, like “Beware the Ides of March” Julius Caesar.

You see, the day was established to keep the seasons and the calendar in sync. A year is measured by the amount of time it takes the sun to return to the spot directly above the Earth’s equator. Although it actually takes 365.2422 days, we [Earthlings] round it to 365. But this results in an error of 0.2422 days, or almost six hours, per year. After 100 years this calendar would be more than 24 days ahead of the seasons, but leap day makes up for the inaccuracy.

Okay, I’m no astronomer. But I did learn this interesting fact from a great article I read today! There’s actually a ton of stuff I didn’t know about Leap Year. Like…the chances of a leap birthday are one in 1,461, and according to global statistics, there are about 4.1 million people worldwide born on Feb. 29. Who knew?

Hope you all had a great “Leap Day”! Check out these statistics and other February 29 facts on THIS SITE.

Let’s talk Twitter for a second…

February 16, 2012

FACT: I tweet a lot.

FACT: Half is personal, half is professional.

FACT: I don’t know if all the content I post is actually worth reading…(I’d like to think so, but I know that is not the case).

Well…of all Twitterers EVER (well…only 21,000 to be exact) 25 percent don’t think content is worth reading according to researchers from Carnegie Mellon University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Georgia Institute of Technology.

The three colleges surveyed Twitter users about how they perceive what they read in 140 characters. They created a website “Who Gives a Tweet?” and asked visitors to anonymously submit their tweets for feedback if they agreed to anonymously rate tweets of Twitter users they were following.

In late 2010 and early 2011, during a period of 19 days, slightly fewer than 1,500 visitors to the site rated nearly 44,000 tweets from the accounts of 21,000 Twitter users. To check out the stats and read some of the lessons for landing your tweet in the “worth reading” category, check out my post on the Borshoff blog. Do you agree with these nine lessons? Anything you’d add or remove? I think they nailed it!

Super Bowl XLVI

February 11, 2012

On Sunday, February 5, the city of  Indianapolis did something it never thought it would get the chance to do–host a Super Bowl.

Indianapolis didn’t just host the Super Bowl, we blew everyone away and set the bar high (can you tell I’m a bit biased?). Indy was, by far, the best Super Bowl host city the NFL had ever seen! Working one block away from Super Bowl village certainly had its perks. I was in front of the action all week long.  I’m not going to dive into all the greatness that Indy provided–just too much to name–but I did have a chance to capture pictures from the week. From the Super Bowl Media Party, to the zipline, to the Maxim Party, hamster wheels and more; it was a week I’ll never forget. I even got a shot of THE Herm Edwards. Be sure to check out the pictures, as well as this Indianapolis Super Bowl time-lapsed video.
