Super Bowl XLVI

February 11, 2012

On Sunday, February 5, the city of  Indianapolis did something it never thought it would get the chance to do–host a Super Bowl.

Indianapolis didn’t just host the Super Bowl, we blew everyone away and set the bar high (can you tell I’m a bit biased?). Indy was, by far, the best Super Bowl host city the NFL had ever seen! Working one block away from Super Bowl village certainly had its perks. I was in front of the action all week long.  I’m not going to dive into all the greatness that Indy provided–just too much to name–but I did have a chance to capture pictures from the week. From the Super Bowl Media Party, to the zipline, to the Maxim Party, hamster wheels and more; it was a week I’ll never forget. I even got a shot of THE Herm Edwards. Be sure to check out the pictures, as well as this Indianapolis Super Bowl time-lapsed video.

A professional milestone

October 18, 2011

There is a first for everything and today was a milestone in my professional career. I was asked to sit on a panel with other communications professionals at the 2011 Indiana Association of College Admission Counseling (IACAC) fall conference. It was surreal! For so long, I had been that person in the audience listening to other professionals talk about “dos and don’ts”, “How to’s”, and “Why this vs. that” for so long. Now it was my turn to share some wisdom.

The IACAC fall congress brings together all Indiana university and college admission staff annually. The conference is a three-day event and covers “hot” enrollment management/admission topics. The session I participated in was pretty unique because usually the sessions cover topics like financial aid, ethics in higher education, and admission information. Communication is a unique thing to colleges and universities. There are so many other things to think about that often, communication is not the main focus. My session dived right into it.

The session was titled ‘Strategies for Communication and Social Media in Higher Education’. Brilliant!

Not only was our session a hit, but I served on the panel with my own friends. My communications friends from Butler talked about tweeting/blogging and focus groups/researching in higher education (the dos and don’ts). My friend from the ICVA spoke about email/print communication tips. From the agency standpoint, I discussed social media policies and strategies and why both are crucial to have in any organization regardless the industry.

The audience was fully engaged the entire time and asked tons of great questions. Afterwards, several  came up to thank the panel and shook our hands. It was so gratifying to hear that people valued what I said and wanted to integrate my professional advice into their communication strategies.  That was the most rewarding part of the whole experience.

I must admit I was a little nervous going into the session. After all, 80 people attended! However, afterwards I felt great as the experience helped me become a better public speaker, too. Hopefully I can take part in more professional development opportunities in the future.

A Day of Caring. A Day Remembered

August 31, 2011

Last week I had the opportunity to do something I wish I did more often. VOLUNTEER.

As a representative of Borshoff, I participated in United Way’s Day of Caring. My coworker and I visited St. Elizabeth/Coleman Pregnancy & Adoption Services center. And guess what…yep…I blogged about it! Read about my experience on Borshoff’s blog!

Painting Indy Green for St. Patrick’s Day

March 16, 2011

Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day! It’s funny…all through grade school, I understood St. Patrick’s Day to be the day when people wore green to school. If you didn’t, you were destined to be pinched. It was a fun holiday to celebrate. However, I never fully appreciated the holiday until college and even more after college. St. Patrick’s Day may be one of the greatest adult holidays ever! It’s pretty much on the same level as Cinco de Mayo and Halloween; it’s that awesome.

It wasn’t until after college that I realized that Indianapolis celebrates St. Patrick’s Day wholeheartedly. Every year, during the month of March, the city takes part in its annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration.  Events include a Shamrock Run & Walk (took place March 12), the Greening of the Canal (March 17), Tent Party and Irish Citizen Award (March 17), and the annual parade (March 17). This year will be the 31st annual parade. Impressive!

Last year, through work, I was able to participate in the parade through a community service opportunity. I was amazed by the number of people who came out to celebrate!  There were floats, news media and thousands of people lining the streets downtown. Not surprisingly, the bars were packed and bombarded with Irish and Irish-loving citizens enjoying their green beers. Festive Irish music fills the streets—bag pipes strong and kilts perfectly pleaded. It’s really a great time.

This year, I am not participating in the parade but some of my coworkers and I plan to eat lunch along the parade route (no drinking, of course). I’m pumped!

If you are planning to be downtown for the celebration, some of my favorite bars (that partake in festivities) include The Claddagh, The Rathskellar and O’Reilly’s Irish Pub.

Want to celebrate more? Check out Indy’s Irish Fest. The 16th Annual Irish Fest will be September 16-18, 2011.  I went last year and it was definitely a day to remember.

Finally, just because…“An-one seen a leprechaun, say yeeeaaaa.”

Everyone have a great (and safe) St. Patrick’s Day!
